Comprehensions skill:  main idea and details
Read decodables 52-55 (If some are difficult, keep them until your child masters them)
If they are easy reads, offer other challenging daily reading. Let me know if you need books.
Read the story of the week and answer the read and respond question.

Math

We are continuing with subtraction and exploring numbers.
On Friday we will assess on chapter three and continue subtraction strategies. We will then continue exploring subtraction with bigger numbers.
Complete math pages 45, 46, 47 49, 50, and 53.

Next Monday we will have our Thanksgiving Breakfast. We will be making butter and cornmeal pancakes. Serve your child a light breakfast at home since he or she will be enjoying a nice breakfast.

Story of the week: "Animal Park"
Question of the week: What can we learn by watching wild animals?
Skills of the week: Short u sound spelled u and final blends (mp, st, ck).
Comprehension skill: Cause and Effect
Reading: Read decodables 48-51, Read Animal Park, parents do not forget to ask the comprehension question on the read and respond paper--it is about cause and effect.
Also choose two activities that will help your child with the spelling list and check them off the list. Complete Spelling pg. 23, 24 and phonics pg. 117, 118.

Math

We are working on subtraction strategies. Complete pg. 42, 43, 44 and 93 and 94.
Continue to practice the doubles to join the Doubles Club.

Announcements

Packs of O'Plenty- The room parents have sent a request for donations for the Thanksgiving basket that our class will donate. Please send in items by Nov. 25th. Thanks for being so generous to others in need.

Thanksgiving Breakfast
Room 4 will be enjoying a Thanksgiving Feast on Monday, Nov. 25. We will be having a special Thanksgiving breakfast first thing in the morning. We will be making cornmeal pancakes and churning our own butter.

Story of the week: "Get the Egg!"
Question of the week: Which wild animals live in our neighborhood?
Reading Skills of the week: short e and initial  consonant blends
comprehension skill: Main Idea
  • Reading log: Read decodables 42-47 and read "Get the Egg!" on Wednesday evening and initial the boxes. Ask  your students the read and respond question and initial paper.
  • Complete the spelling worksheet page 19 and the phonics page 107, 108
Math Homework:
Skills of this week: We have started subtraction strategies
  • Review addition skills with an emphasis on doubles and doubles plus one strategies. Also ask your child about our addition tool belt.
  • Doubles facts testing will begin this week (2+2=  3+3= 4+
  • Also review subtraction stories pg. 39, 40

Skills of the week: inflected endings adding  --s  and --ing to base words

Homework:
  • Read the two decodables, free choice title, "The  Big Blue Ox", and "They Can Help". And continue to practice your unit 1 sight word list.
  • Read and Respond Sheet--practice spelling words and notice the skill (short o words). Memorize the spelling of the two bonus words for the test. Initial the read and respond question after reading "The Big Blue Ox". What two activities are you using to practice spelling? Please initial.

Pumpkin Project Thank you for sending in your pumpkin. We will be having fun with Pumpkin Science next week!

Walk-a-thon We had fun walking last Wednesday! Thank you for helping our school raise over 20 thousand dollars!

Family Fun Night Please join us this Friday for the Monster Mash! Students can wear their costumes (no weapons!). I will be looking for all of my wonderful students.

 Complete the math worksheets and touch math page.
Oral Report
Have fun with your Halloween riddle. Make sure that your child does not show their riddle doll  to any one. This will make the guessing more fun! Please let me know what day your child will be presenting.
Have your child start with an opening sentence and end with a final thank you closing sentence for the audience.

Walk-a-thon
This Wednesday is the  Plum Canyon Walk-a-thon. Please make sure that your child wears comfortable tennis shoes.  Also please apply sunscreen if necessary. Our scheduled time is 8:35 to 9:20 am. We will be stretching and then walking for 20 minutes. Come join if you would like.

Disaster Drill this Friday
This Friday there will be a school wide disaster drill practice at 1:30. Students will be practicing what to do in case of an earthquake.

Special Pumpkin Science Project
You may send in the small pumpkin anytime. Let me know if it will be difficult for you to get a pumpkin. I will try to purchase extras. Also, your child will be bringing this pumpkin back home.



 
Story of the week: "Sam Come Back"
Reading-
  • Read the decodables and the story in the new book. Initial the yellow reading log. Please make sure that the hardbound book is covered (do not use contact paper or tape/glue).
  •  Read and Respond Sheet--this week we start the spelling tests. As you can see, there is a list of very easy short a  words. The bonus words did not appear on the spelling list this week-- they are way and come. These are high frequency words that your child must memorize for the spelling test as well.
    Choose two activities that will help your child spell the words correctly and initial. It is optional for you to turn in  this work in the Friday Homework folder. Ask your child the "read and respond"question and initial that portion of the sheet.
  • Phonics page 67, 68--complete page.
Math-
  • Complete all of the math pages.
  • Not enough homework? Use the Family Times daily ideas to enrich your child. Play the game as well. Practice skills on the websites provided at the goal setting conference.
Other Important Information:
Book It Program- Starting Oct. 1 please have your child color the Book It reading log I gave you at the goal setting conference. At the end of October turn it in so that your child can be in the Book It Club and earn a free individual pizza for Pizza Hut. If you lost the paper please ask me for a new one :0).

Pet pictures- If you can, please send a picture of your family pet this week so that your child may share it with the class. If you do not have a pet, your child can draw a picture of a pet he or she would want to adopt.

Reading-
  • read decodables, story of the week, and practice sight words/decodable words for testing this week. Please initial the yellow log.
  • Read and Respond sheet- memorize high frequency words, ask your child the question about realism and fantasy after reading Farmers Market and initial the sheet.

Family Times (folded pamphlet)--this informs you of all the skills taught this week. It provides fun games and daily activities that you may do with your child. This is enrichment and optional homework.

                             Please send in a healthy snack on minimum days, first graders get hungry!
Goal Setting Conferences-please be prompt. Conferences are scheduled in 20 minute intervals. I have a full schedule and look forward to meeting with you. If you are running late or unable to attend please email me immediately.

Room Parents: Our wonderful team includes Lori Cordola (Sierra), Kat Roberts (Kierstyn), and Heidi Metlen (Henry). They will be sending you a letter of introduction sometime this week. We are lucky that they will be taking care of room!

Substitute: The first grade team will be at a district training on Friday,  Sept. 27. Mrs. Birkland, a credentialed substitute teacher, will be here teaching our first graders.

Awards: The first of four awards assemblies this year will be on Tuesday, October 1st. Students that demonstrate performance above and beyond in the areas of scholarship, writing, citizenship, and effort will be given an award. If you receive an invitation this week, your child and you will be invited to attend on Oct. 1st.
